Dawn Keepers is the second book in Jessica Andersen’s The Final Prophecy series. The series is built around Mayan mythology belief that on December 21, 2012 demons from the underworld will trigger an apocalypse. The Nightkeepers, a race of magic wielding warrior priests, are fighting to stop that. This book features two Nightkeepers that were introduced in the first book, Nate Blackhawk and Alexis Gray.
Jessica Anderson is one of those authors that draws you slowly into the book. There is no immediate hook to draw the reader forward, instead she provides a lure. Dawn Keepers held my interest, just as its predecessor Nightkeepers did. This is not a light read, there are Mayan terms to learn, she does provide a glossary, and multiple villains to find and defeat. In the middle of all of this is the romance between Nick and Alexis. Though both were born to Nightkeeper parents, their childhoods were extremely different and provide a lot of the tension between them. Sometimes the twists and turns of the book don’t seem to make sense but if you stick with it you’ll discover that they do indeed mesh together.
