Christa Bailey has planned and practiced for years to make the Olympic softball team. She plays on a team and consistently does well. She hopes that it will only be a matter of time before she is given the go-ahead nod by someone to take her position and represent the United States. She just needs to be patient. Lately, someone in the stands sits right behind home plate and cheers her on at every home game. She tries to shut him out and concentrate on her game but it becomes increasingly annoying and distracting. He's never approached her but if he does, what would she say? Sometimes he verges on going too far in his appreciation for her ability as a softball player. Is he really just an avid fan or is he really an obsessed fan? Christa just hopes he keeps his distance so she doesn't take her eyes off her goal.
Rayne Hutchinson is a member of the Emergency Response Team and is good friends with Christa's best friends, Teryl and Drew. He is a ladies' man and has had many relationships that almost never last longer than a few months. He is happy being single and is in no hurry to settle down. He likes playing the field. He has, of course, run into Christa at Teryl and Drew's home over the years. He thinks she is pretty and has always admired how she is so self-sufficient in everything she takes on. Lately, however, he begins to feel more of an attraction to her. When she tells him about her would-be stalker, not only does his professional protective side come to the forefront but so does his personal protective side. What is going on here?
I rode the roller coaster ride of Rayne and Christa and have never enjoyed being on the edge of my seat like this before. The author illustrates not only the scenery perfectly but also the personalities of the characters. While the reader isn't privy to the details of Christa's prior relationship, it is made very clear that she lacks confidence in herself because of it. The emotions that Christa kept trapped inside and the way she was forced to confront and deal with them were heart-wrenching. You cry for her, and you cheer her on at every little baby step that brings her back to some sense of normalcy when it comes to romantic relationships. Rayne is battling his own demons that stem from being abandoned by his father when he was a young boy. Along with falling for Christa, he realizes he needs to deal with his own problems before attempting anything with her. Christa's stalker adds a whole other dimension to the plot and leads the reader on a suspense-filled path that makes you constantly wonder what is just around the corner. I was so impressed by the depth of the story and how each different layer was carefully pulled together in the end. Truly one of the most remarkable stories I have read. Kudos to the Ms. Cross for a story well-told.
