Mel Broward has resigned himself to being a prisoner for the rest of his natural life. In a stroke of luck, he is given an opportunity to be paroled to assist an alien planet as a safehacker. He begins a relationship with his aien partner, Neertreffa, as one of friend, educator and bed partner. They are quickly thrust into a war neither expected but both learn to adapt in all ways necessary to escape their enemy, Murtka.
The way the two main characters come to depend on one another after knowing next to nothing about each other is genius. Mel is set in his ways but learns to depend on Neertreffa in ways he has never depended on anyone. By the same token, Neertreffa is used to coping with situations based on mathmatics and planning. Being on the run in an attempt to reach safe ground forces them to look not only inside themselves but to each other for their survival. The revelations and changes the characters go through is fascinating. Anyone reading this short story will find it thought-provoking and eye-opening in many ways.
