AnnaMarie Whitson, a widow in her twilight years, spent the last five years caring for her husband and now is determined to become an independent woman. Her adult children, however, expect her to act her age, maintain their childhood home, and serve as babysitter. Determined to be her own person, she attends her high school reunion and there becomes re-acquainted with Jay, a boyfriend from years past. While overcoming the roadblocks erected by their family and friends, AnnaMarie and Jay enjoy the right to retrieve the morning of their lives.
I loved the feel of this book. As a person entering middle age it was nice to read about what happens next; that there was something after our youth is “gone.” Ms. Martin created a feeling of hope that romance, sexuality, and love are possibilities the second time around. I really enjoyed learning about the characters and their emotions. I would have liked a “happily ever after” moment but felt that the ending was a type of closure and beginning all at once. A lovely read for a mature audience who may be tired of the twenty-somethings who always fall in love and live the dream. The author used a concept we have little of in America, a second chance for that fluttery feeling of love and desire. Nice job, I can’t wait to read more about AnnaMarie and Jay!
