Review - Gaven by JC Owens
Author: JC Owens
Publisher: Loose ID LLC
Rating: You Need to Read
Reviewer: Nerine Dorman
When the Masarians attack Gaven's people, they are defeated and Gaven himself is taken captive. By a man claiming to be his father. It turns out his entire life has been a lie, and now his 'father' will give him into the hands of another man to indoctrinate and train him. Gaven vows he will never shame his people by giving into the Masarians' way of loving other men.
But Vlar, the legendary warrior to whom he has been given, has other plans. The blood-drinker is determined to have Gaven and to make him yield.
Author JC Owens has succeeded in blowing me away with this novella, keeping me locked to the screen with his account of how Gaven finds his place within the Masarian’s way of life. This story is at times harrowing but I thoroughly enjoyed discovering Gaven’s world and following his journey as he changes his opinions. At times I do wish the author could have shown me more of this world with some descriptions of the scenery but JC Owens’s storytelling ability is strong, and I was swept away by the tale’s pace.
Gaven certainly does not have things easy. Raised as the outcast and illegitimate son of a witch, he is unprepared for the status he gains once he is captured by his father’s band of warriors. At first angry and frightened at the manner in which he is taken captive, Gaven gradually comes to accept and understand the challenges he faces. The road he follows certainly isn’t easy and he has much to learn in a world that is both violent and sensual.
