When Henry — youngest son of the Duke of Frostmire and Thomas's roommate — is called home to fight raiders, Thomas expects to have a quiet year at the Royal Academy.

Instead, Eileen arrives at his doorstep, having run away to come to the Academy, and Henry returns telling stories of an enemy that uses magic. Even as Thomas agrees to help, new threats rise around them, driving them from the city to face an unknown enemy in the north.

And the Church of the High Father has not forgiven them either.

A good story must have believable characters, a vivid world, a strong plot, and writing that has both flows and illuminates the world. But having all these things will not get a story a Gotta Read. For the highest rating, a story must be more then the sum of its parts. It mut be captivating.

This story is by far one of the best I’ve had the pleasure to review. Thomas is larger than life without being overblown. I feel for him as he suffers through his trials, I worry with him about the safety of those around him, and I feel a great satisfaction as he overcomes.

The plot is all smoke a mirrors, making sure the villain stayed close to vest until the very end. There are so many people spying on and backstabbing each other, it feels like a very real political area; and in this case, politics is a blood sport.

I cannot recommend this book enough. I hope there are more to come in this series and will be picking up a copy of the first book in the near future.
