There's no love lost between criminal defense lawyer Suzannah Phelps and the St. Cloud police department. Now she's being stalked, but she won't turn to the police, who may be behind it. But when Det. John Quigley learns of it, he's determined to protect her, no matter who is harassing her. They've struck sparks off each other in the courtroom, and he's burning to do the same in the bedroom.

The concept of this story is bare bones basic, to the point that it could be called formulaic. The execution, however, is excellent.

Quinn harkens back to the hard boiled gum shoes, a tenacious bull dog of a cop who won't let something go once he sinks his teeth into it. Suzannah is an upper crust girl who is clearly very used to having her own way. This gives the story an almost modern Noir feel.

On the other hand, there is a bit of false drama towards the end, a clear strawman event that serves only to push the plot to its conclusion. This situation could easily have been handled a different way and achieved the same results without undermining the relationship in the process.

The sex is good and the scenes fit well into the story, rather than being shoe horned in just to titillate the reader.

Overall, a wonderful story that just doesn't quite earn a Gotta Read.
