Shay is an ordinary college girl with an extraordinary birthright. Handsome professor Aiden Klemenson singles her out as a potential Chosen of the benevolent Gods of Creation, and his perfect woman. He tries to convince Eliana that she is born to do the work of the Gods, but her upbringing hasn’t given her much faith in gods or destiny. Despite her better judgment, desire burns between them with an enchantment all its own.
The Gods of Destruction will stop at nothing to keep Eliana from fulfilling her destiny: to become a formidable warrior against evil. Cunning and deceitful, they send demons and magical serial killers to exterminate her before she can become a threat. With Aidan’s guidance, Eliana realizes that in order to survive she must accept her fate and learn to harness the fierce magic within her--and open her heart to his love.
In a world where all religions are embraced and magic is the norm, Eliana Shay is a stand out because of her atheist parents. When her professor, Aiden Klemenson recognizes her as a fellow Chosen, he consults with his patron god, ODIN. Instructed to mentor the young Chosen, Aiden is ill prepared to fight the forces of destruction that are determined to keep Eliana from becoming a Chosen for the Creator. He must also fight his growing attraction for the feisty, young co-ed.
There were several things that I really liked about this book. I loved how quickly I became immersed in this alternate world of ancient religions and magic. It was brilliantly crafted and very believable. I also loved Ms. Mayburn’s free use of humor, there were several passages that just cracked me up. I looooooved Devon, a hunky temple guard, and Jack, a friend of Aiden’s and a Chosen of Loki. Personally, I probably would have dumped Aiden for either one of these guys. Aiden, while gorgeous and all, just didn’t stir my blood, the way Devon and Jack did. Plus Aiden’s mom is a dynasty snob, who is all into bloodlines and pedigrees. Grrrr. The villains are muy terrible, Hannibal Lecter type evil. Lots of graphic gore and horror are always a favorite of mine. The sex was graphic and not overwhelming, I just wish it had been a tad more urgent and passionate. They both seemed very controlled. A wild, hedonistic free for all would not have been amiss.
Now, for our heroine Eliana, when the big bads are after you, and your mentor tells you not to go out alone………..DO NOT GO OUT ALONE. I mean, I know this is an alternate world, but surely the slasher film formula still applies. Young sexy girl goes for hike in the woods alone, and BAM, demon hounds are ready to tear the flesh from your bones. That was really my only complaint. It was a tremendously entertaining and unique read that has me waiting for the second book.
