For Caillen Dagan, a defiant soldier of fortune, survival isn't a right, it's a brutal daily battle. Moving through the Ichidaian universe like a wraith, his brushes with the law and death are legendary. But when an act of rare heroism reveals his hidden birthright, he's forced into a world much more dangerous and cold-hearted than the bloody streets where he was raised-one of obscene wealth and lethal politics.
Ferocious and determined, Desideria serves as an official bodyguard for her queen. Born of questionable genetics, she will do anything to prove herself worthy of the weapons she carries and the position she's won by combat. But when she uncovers a ruthless plot to assassinate the queen and overthrow her country's government, Desideria is caught in the crosshairs.
With assassination contracts out on both of them, Caillen and Desideria must learn to fight together or die alone. And if they fail, their governments will fall into the hands of an unimaginable evil.
Caillen Dagan was only eight years old when his father charged him with the care and safety of his three older sisters. Watching his last surviving parent get gunned down in the gutter forced Caillen to grow up far faster than he should have. On a mission to save his sister Kasen, Caillen takes the blame for her crime and is sentenced to be executed. Minutes before his scheduled beheading Caillen gets a reprieve and the surprise of his life. Desideria Denarii is a half breed Qillaq, a fierce race of warrior women. Her only desire is to gain the respect and love of her mother, Queen Sarra. Framed for the murder of their parents, Caillen and Desideria must come together to find the killer while fleeing the League assassins hot on their trail.
I am always a fan of Ms. Kenyon’s work, and Born of Shadows was no exception. Having read this series from the beginning made the story and secondary characters much easier to follow and much more enjoyable. I think it might be a tad hard to follow if the reader is unfamiliar with the backstories of the characters involved, especially where the League and the Sentella are concerned. While Caillen is familiar to followers of this series, Desideria is a completely new element that I absolutely approved of. She was a strong, dominant woman who bowed to no one, yet she wasn’t as abrasive as some strong female characters come across. One of the hallmarks of Sherrilyn’s work is the humorous, bantering dialogue between characters, and this is in full evidence in this book.
The coming together of Caillen and Desideria gave each one the opportunity to resolve painful issues within themselves. They fit together seamlessly and when they finally get down to business, it is more of a natural occurrence than a “ta-da” moment. There was a hint of a major surprise coming for Darling, one of the main secondaries. I will add this to my collection of favorite series, and watch intently for the next installment.
