When a dangerous-looking stranger raps on Lizzie Winstead’s door in the middle of a stormy night, the peace of her humdrum life is shattered. She’s shocked to discover her visitor is Captain Edmond Grey, one of the most feared pirates of the realm—and her lost love.

Edmond is a wanted man throughout the Colonies, but despite his formidable reputation, he desperately needs her help to nurse his wounded brother back to health. Only Lizzie can be trusted not to turn Edmond over to authorities for the price on his head.

Lizzie can’t quell the feelings Edmond stirs in her heart or the fire he ignites in her blood. Before long, both succumb to the reckless desire renewed between them. She follows him aboard his pirate ship and sets sail into a world rife with passion and peril. Together they brave fierce battles and frightening storms, determined to discover whether the love they once shared is strong enough to reunite them forever and conquer the demons of Edmond’s past.

An unfulfilled young love is rekindled when Edmund, a notorious pirate, seeks out Lizzie’s father, a surgeon, to tend to his younger brother, Thomas. His brother has been shot and is very ill. Having learned that Lizzie’s father had left England and moved to the Colonies, Edmund hopes he can convince the good doctor to attend to his brother.

When the door to Dr. Crawley’s residence is open, he finds his lost love instead. The doctor is away on business, leaving his widowed daughter, Izzie to look out for his patients in his absence. Edmund convinces Izzie to accompany him to his ship and tend to his brother. As Izzie nurses Thomas back to good health, she and Edmund rediscover their love for each other.

Izzie experiences the life of a pirate, surviving a dangerous storm and an attack from the Royal Navy during her voyage with Edmund. The ship is heavily damaged; in part from the storm as well as the Navy’s attack. Edmund decides they must make port in Virginia and repair the ship. During a horseback trip to a sympathizer’s plantation, Izzie is taken prisoner. Will Edmund find her before its too late? You’ll have to read it yourself to find out!

While I enjoyed this quick read, the lack of resistance from the heroine bothered me. She acquiesced too easily and too often. She was selfless to a fault, always thinking of Edmund’s needs before her own. I would have liked to see a bit more spunk from Izzie and a bit more danger from Edmund. He almost seemed to be a gentleman “playing” at being a pirate.

The characters were endearing, making the reader want to read more. I’d love to have seen this story developed a bit more. The scenes seemed a bit rushed and always had a happy ending. Don’t misunderstand me, I LOVE happy endings… I just want my hero and heroine to have to work a bit harder for theirs. If a person is looking to lose themselves for an hour or two, this story fills the bill. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Scott’s writing!
