It’s been twenty years since security specialist Charley Roper and country star Dallas Creed had their bitter parting. Now a killer has brought them together again, but neither is ready for a reunion—despite signs that their explosive chemistry hasn’t waned with time. She can’t forget the feel of his hands on her body. He can’t forget the hot touch of her mouth. When they finally tumble into bed, the sex is just as good as they remember, hot enough to singe the sheets. But is it enough?
Thrown together during an exhausting, frenzied concert tour, with a killer nipping at their heels, Dallas and Charley find themselves on a hot, suspenseful, erotic roller coaster ride. Can he convince her to trust her heart to him one more time, to reach out for a richer, deeper, more mature love?
More importantly—can Charley keep Dallas alive long enough for either of them to enjoy a second chance?
Twenty years ago Dallas Creed and Charlotte (Charly) Roper were everything to each other and on the verge of a bright and loving future together. Then Dallas announced his decision to try his hand at becoming a country music singer instead of working on his ranch as Charly and Dallas had planned. After a heated and bitter argument, Dallas storms out, and the two haven’t crossed paths again. Until someone tries to kill Dallas during his sold out comeback tour, and Dallas’s brother Morgan goes to Charly for help. Charley is now one of the top security experts in the world, but is she strong enough to put the past behind her to save Dallas’s life?
Downstroke posed a quandary for me because while I always look for really strong heroines to root for, Charly just didn’t make a lot of sense to me. She is really hurt and mad that Dallas wants to change their plans in mid-stream. Ok, I get that, but is that enough to end their relationship over? I mean she did tell him to leave and it was over. Sounds a little control freaky to me. Now twenty years later she still holds him totally responsible for the break up……hmmm. Even after they have semi reconciled, he is the one to initiate everything. He apologizes, he says he wants a future together, he even says I love you first. Don’t get me wrong, I loooooved Dallas. Very on the fence about Charly.
Desiree Holt’s writing overcame my misgivings about Charley though. The story was enthralling and fast paced. The secondary characters kept me guessing until the very end of the book. Very nice work, because that rarely happens. The dialogue was sharp, exciting, and pleasantly just a little raunchy. As is a trademark for the author the sex was scorching hot, and plentiful. While this was my first book by this author it most assuredly will not be my last.
