Rating: You Gotta Read

Reviewer: Wendy Mitchell

Payne, twin sister of Vishous, is cut from the same dark, warrior cloth as her brother: A fighter by nature, and a maverick when it comes to the traditional role of Chosen females, there is no place for her on the Far Side… and no role for her on the front lines of the war, either.

When she suffers a paralyzing injury, human surgeon Dr. Manuel Manello is called in to treat her as only he can- and he soon gets sucked into her dangerous, secret world. Although he never before believed in things that go bump in the night- like vampires- he finds himself more than willing to be seduced by the powerful female who marks both his body and his soul.

As the two find so much more than an erotic connection, the human and vampire worlds collide … just as a centuries old score catches up with Payne and puts both her love and her life in deadly jeopardy.

Payne is the daughter of the Scribe Virgin, the deity and creator of vampire civilization, and Bloodletter, the most cruel and brutal Brother in the history of the Brotherhood. She was bred to be the epitome of female standards. Payne wants no part of this, in her heart, she is a warrior. Manny Manello is head of surgery and a world renowned orthopedic surgeon, with ties to the vampire world he knows nothing about. When Payne is injured while sparring, Manny is brought in to the Brotherhood compound to save Payne’s life.

It is hard to objectively review this book, when Ms. Ward could spit on a page and I would fight to the death to own it. Like the previous books of this series, this is a stand alone book, but you will not get anywhere near the full impact of this story without a complete understanding of the Brothers and their history. Payne is by far my favorite heroine so far. She is a perfect warrior and will compromise nothing. Yet she is innocent of guile and completely open with Manny about her wants and desires. Whew! And does this girl want?? I think this is the hottest and most sensual of the series. Yay!! Manny has no clue going into this that vampires exist. He has been in a downward spiral ever since he lost Jane Whitcomb to a car accident, a colleague and perhaps someone he was meant to spend his life with. I knew from Manny’s first appearance in Lover Unbound, that he would make a strong and compelling hero.

Vishous, along with his mate Jane, plays a huge part in this story. Though I love all the Brothers, V really worked my nerves in this book. V is also Payne’s twin, of whom he had no prior knowledge. So, finding out about her sends him right over the edge into major butt munch land. There are so many twists and turns and new aspects to this story that I’m sure I will read it at least 10 more times before the next book comes out, and I guarantee I will enjoy it more every time.
