Raine Spenser is on the brink. Held prisoner because of her abilities, Raine—a powerful psychic as well as vampire—desperately needed a savior. But the last one she expected was the green-eyed soldier who’d once hunted her kind. Since her rescue, she’s tried to forget Seth McConnell, unable to cope with the strange, simmering attraction that draws her to the compelling human.

But their goals—find the Kraven who held Raine captive and destroy him—are the same. The ever-growing web of danger surrounding them draws these two unlikely allies closer together, and anger slowly turns into an explosive passion they’re finding harder and harder to deny...

There is a war being fought that most of humanity knows nothing about. The Casus, a species of Others, were imprisoned in Meridian by the others branches of non-humans inhabiting the planet. They were too evil and destructive to live amongst the population. Now they are trying to break free and a select few are trying to stop this. Raine is a half breed Deschanel vampire that was help captive in a Casus sympathizer’s compound. Seth, is a human and though once a member of the Collective army, he now fights for the Watchmen, those who seek and end to the Casus threat. After Seth rescues Raine, he feels an increasing pull towards her. Raine is bent on revenge and doesn’t need Seth tagging along.

This is one of my “ must read series”. It gets better and more inventive with every book. The unique spin Ms. Byrd has put on the paranormal is just riveting. It involves every branch of the supernatural, even a few I have never heard of. It continues to stay fresh and watching the characters evolve through this series has been a joy. This is also by far the hottest book of the series. Raine and Seth really set the pages on fire. Seth has always been one of my favorite characters and pairing him up with a damaged vampire was brilliant. He was able to confront some of his own demons while helping Raine with hers. The war with the Casus is really heating up and the gang finally makes it to the gates of Meridian to stop the resurrection. That’s all I’m saying about that. The Granger brothers, Ashe and Gideon are major players in this story, along with Noah. I hope to be reading their books very soon.
