Blurb:

Ewan McCabe, the eldest, is a warrior determined to vanquish his enemy. Now, with the time ripe for battle, his men are ready and Ewan is poised to take back what is his—until a blue-eyed, raven-haired temptress is thrust upon him. Mairin may be the salvation of Ewan’s clan, but for a man who dreams only of revenge, matters of the heart are strange territory to conquer.

Though the illegitimate daughter of the king, Mairin possesses prized property that has made her a pawn—and wary of love. Her worst fears are realized when she is rescued from peril, only to be forced into marriage by her charismatic and commanding savior, Ewan McCabe. But her attraction to her ruggedly powerful new husband finds her craving his surprisingly tender touch; her body comes alive under his sensual mastery. And as war draws near, Mairin’s strength, spirit, and passion challenge Ewan to conquer his demons—and embrace a love that means more than revenge and land.

Review:

Mairin Stewart had been placed in a convent since early childhood to protect her and her royal secret. It is her link to the king of Scotland that has proven to be her biggest threat. Now she has been discovered and ripped from the security of her haven, to be used as a weapon against the crown and to gain her impressive dowry. Ewan McCabe’s only son Crispin has disappeared. The Laird of the decimated McCabe clan is frantic. When the boy is found with a woman wearing the colors of his hated enemy Duncan Cameron, he is rightfully enraged. Crispin has vowed to protect Mairin and her secret, even from his father if necessary, but when Ewan learns of the mysterious woman’s bravery in protecting his son from Duncan, he gives her his promise of protection as well. Ewan‘s idea of protection calls for a priest, rings, and a bed. He intends to marry Mairin.

This is one of the easiest reviews I will ever have to write because I can do it in one word. PERFECT. *sigh* I guess I should expand on that a bit. The heroine Mairin was a peach. She was very sheltered, but not the least bit timid or afraid to say what was on her mind. In fact that is a running joke through the entire book. If she has a thought, it is verbalized whether or not it’s appropriate. I just loved her character and she has joined the list of my favorite heroines. To say that she had snark was a given, but she also developed a bit of a mean streak, which was just the cherry on top of the sundae. Ewan is a Highland Laird, so already ..yum. Dominant, aggressive, arrogant, Ewan had these traits in spades. He was also fair, funny, loyal and protective. Oh. And frickin HOT. Still not your cup of tea, well he has two brothers, so there’s something for every taste.

The story itself was wildly entertaining and I read it with out putting it down once. It has all the elements of a great Scottish love story. Betrayal, lust, greed, plenty of bloody fights, amazingly witty dialogue and just the right amount of sizzling sex . Maya Banks is well on her way to conquering all the romance genres. She certainly has command of this one. This is a “Must Read” for any fan of great romance regardless of the genre. There is absolutely no way you will regret reading this book, and it will leave you panting for the next in the series. Really Maya, a trilogy? That is not going to be any where close to enough. Maybe there are a few McCabe cousins you don’t know about.
