Black Jag, Book Two

Jaguars are hunters, through and through. That lifestyle will be protected at all costs in the Costa Rican rain forest village of Guarida, where Ran VicMoran and his littermates have settled. Ran will hunt and kill as necessary to protect their peaceful way of life. Times are changing though, and danger comes on two feet.

Olivia Sancerre has endured her overbearing mother all her life. She won’t be the same manipulative woman her mother is. However, each time Olivia runs into Ran, her calm, quiet nature dissolves and she can’t seem to stop sparring with him. The more they banter, the hotter she is for the incredibly sexy, commanding jaguar.

As danger smells stronger, enemies are right under their noses and life as they know it is about to change, Ran and Olivia begin a torrential love affair. Soon they’re not only fighting to remain together, they’re also struggling with a new way of life they never saw coming.

Review:

What an interesting concept and setting for a novel, shapeshifters in the Costa Rican jungle. The most memorable aspect of Ms. O'Clare's Black Passion is her characters: they are so descriptive and colorful that long after the pages are turned and the novel is over they are still in one's mind. The connection between Ran and Olivia is instant and unavoidable. I enjoyed the way Ms. O'Clare made both main characters equally strong (and stubborn) placing the onus for resisting each other on both, which becomes an impossible task to overcome.

She also does a incredible job of world building, creating an insular village for Olivia and Ran to inhabit, one obviously in danger from the not so friendly outside world. Her descriptions of the scenery are lush: the jungle seems to come alive with the smells of the leaves and the trees on the one hand and the sounds of the insects and the animals on the other. The love-scenes in this world are equally vivid and bright, just as lively as the scenery itself. I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It is my first by Ms. O'Clare, and it looks like it will not be my last....

Middlemarch Mates, Book Ten

Saber and Emily are longtime mates. Happiness has been theirs, until the tragic loss of their unborn baby.

Saber is desperate. Emily has shut him out, wallowing in depression. They inhabit the same house but his loving mate has withdrawn, and he wants his happy, matchmaking woman back. It’s time to up the ante. Armed with a bag of sex toys from his wild twin brothers and a tropical island setting, Saber is determined to seduce his mate to his way of thinking, to drive the blues away, and he won’t take no for an answer.

Review:

Blue Lady is a rather simple book at first glance, Saber and Emily are mated but the bond is tested after the death of their unborn child. Their days are filled with the mundane and boring, but their nights are filled with Saber's attempts to cement their relationship. At times Ms. Munro writes an entertaining story however, there is not enough substance to keep it entertaining for a great length of time. I found it difficult to empathize with either character, as they were not portrayed in great depth even for a novella.

While the sex games offered by the brothers are entertaining to a certain extent, they do not make up for an entire book's worth of simple plot and dialogue, they just fill in for an easygoing story that rambles along at a steady pace until Saber and Emily find their way to a happy ending. I am still recommending this book with stipulations however, because it does have a good story, and some redeeming qualities.

Willow knows she’s different from other girls, and not just because she loves tinkering with cars. Willow has a gift. She can look into the future and know people’s dreams and hopes, their sorrows and regrets, just by touching them. She has no idea where this power comes from. But the assassin, Alex, does. Gorgeous, mysterious Alex knows more about Willow than Willow herself. He knows that her powers link to dark and dangerous forces, and that he’s one of the few humans left who can fight them. When Alex finds himself falling in love with his sworn enemy, he discovers that nothing is as it seems, least of all good and evil. In the first book in an action-packed, romantic trilogy, L..A. Weatherly sends readers on a thrill-ride of a road trip - and depicts the human race at the brink of a future as catastrophic as it is deceptively beautiful.

Review:

Not your “Typical” Angel story.

Alex is a hunter, to be specific he hunts angels. No not the heavenly beings from the bible, but a race of creatures that feed on humans. He has been sent to kill Willow, but he is about to find much more than he bargained for in that young lady.

Angel Burn is a great story. The characters are well developed and the scenes are vividly descriptive. The premise of the story is original and interesting and the story is well paced and keeps the readers attention throughout. All in all it is a really entertaining read.

My favorite character is definitely Willow. She has a great blend of innocence and strength that makes her very endearing.

I would definitely say that Angel Burn is one You Need To Read.

He assumes that his two best friends are somehow responsible, until the mysterious Reuben turns up, claiming that Toby has a rare and dangerous “condition.” Next thing he knows, Toby finds himself involved with a strange bunch of sickly insomniacs who seem convinced that he needs their help. It’s not until he’s kidnapped and imprisoned that he starts to believe them—and to understand what being a paranormal monster really means.

Review:

Ok, so I have to admit that even before I read the blurb about this book that I knew I was going to have to read it. Thankfully that didn’t come back to bite me on the rump.

The Abused Werewolf Rescue Group is a very enjoyable story of a young man, Toby, who discovers, after waking up in the dingo pen at a local zoo, that he is a werewolf. Add to that the fact that someone wants to use him in underground “dog” fights, his mothers smothering personality, and the other strange people he encounters and it is amazing Toby does not go completely bonkers.

This story is filled with endearing characters and vividly described scenes. It also flows well and has no boring or dragging areas that bog down the reader. It also has an interesting take on werewolves and vampires that I found to be very enjoyable.

My favorite character in The Abused Werewolf Rescue Group is definitely Toby. He is a great kid, although confused about his situation when he wakes up in the dingo pen. He is strong and determined to figure things out and get away from the guys who want to fight him.

The Abused Werewolf Rescue Group is definitely one You Need To Read.

Review:

How would you react if you found out that the man you love is a werewolf? Katherine is faced with that very dilemma, among others in the first book of the Budapest Moon Series.

I was so very happily surprised by this book. The characters are enchanting, the scenes are vividly written, and the story has a fantastic flow. I really enjoyed the warm love and fiery passion that seemed to leap off the page. The wto major external conflicts in the story are entertaining and interesting.

I really enjoyed Stephanie’s take on werewolves in this story and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series and see if Varga can find love.

How To Meet and Influence Women is a survival manual for the hesitant male. In it, you will learn the secrets of successful seduction, as well as detailed analyses of the female psyche and tips on improving your level of desirability to the gentler gender. Women seem to be born with all the finely tuned mechanisms requisite to the manipulation of the opposite sex. Most men, however, need a little help in that department from time to time. If you’re in that majority, this book is the answer to your prayers.

Review:

Oh, where to begin. As a woman I found this book simultaneously hilarious and insulting. After some consideration, I decided the best way to review this would be the break it into three parts: The good, the bad, and truth about woman. I will be using quotes from the book itself. Quotes will be in italics.

First, the good

This is so obvious I’m almost embarrassed to point it out, yet you would be surprised at the number of men who think that all they have to do is turn on the charm and women will fall all over them. And when they don’t, they think there’s something wrong with the women. What these men fail to see is that women are not interested in filling a man’s needs; they have needs of their own, and what they are looking for is someone with enough empathy to recognize that fact and enough interest in them to do something about it.

This is a good place to start, mainly because it is true. Far too often, men seem to believe that merely having a penis makes them God’s gift to women. In centuries past, women could not own property, they were passed from father to husband with little or no consideration of their feelings. These ideas have lived on in some men, manifesting in a sort of gender specific narcissism. That’s not to say some women haven’t taken the feminism movement too far, they have, but they aren’t the topic here.

This leads us into the second good point.

Don’t be a know-it-all. Women are not stupid, and they resent people who insinuate that they are. If a woman makes a mistake, gloss over it; never point it out gloatingly. Ask her opinion in matters that concern her. Never talk down to a woman. Treat every woman as an intellectual equal—and make it a point to immediately forget every blonde joke you hear from your less enlightened male friends.

There is nothing, absolutely nothing, infuriates me more then being treated as stupid just because I was born without testicles. No one person is an expert in all things, and gender has no bearing on IQ, interest, or experience.

The basic rule is simple: say, “I love you” as often as possible, and never say, “I told you so.”

Don’t argue with her...Let her know that she is more important to you than your male ego.

These “rules” really go both ways, and apply to both genders. The most important part of any relationship, be it romantic or platonic, is respect. If you cannot respect the person you are spending time with, or they cannot respect you, the relationship will quickly become parasitic.

With the good points done, it’s time to move on to the failings of this book.

The Bad

While all of the above are certainly good and noble points, very worthy of note; they, however, were the exception rather then the rule.

Women naturally enjoy sex, and they are naturally interested in men as sexual playmates. Even when their appetites have been repressed by social or religious standards of behavior, women still find sex irresistible—when it’s done right.

Whenever you see two or more women talking together, you can bet that, if they’re not talking about men, they’ve either just finished or they are about to start. The fact that some of this discussion might be disparaging only verifies what my daddy used to say: that women would rather say something bad about men than to not talk about them at all.

This book wins points for the observation that women do, in fact, enjoy sex. A fact that is demonstrated by the existence of this very site and the thousands of others like it across the web. However, these points are lost almost immediately with the undermining idea that women do nothing but talk about men. It was at this moment I turned to a good friend, who has also been my beta and sounding board for many years, and asked her when we last spoke about men, in any capacity. Neither of us could remember ever talking about men at any real length.

At one point this book also advises that, when a girl friend or wife is being “sullen,” it is not a man’s job to find out what is wrong; but instead only to assure her of his feelings. It actually uses the phrase “to change her views to fit your objective – to convince her that whatever has disturbed her is trivial when compared to the extent of your devotion to her.” Because there is nothing a woman sees as devotion like a man who can’t even remember her birthday and considers it trivial.

When a man walks into his living room, he sees a newspaper and an easy chair. A woman walking into the same room sees yesterday’s newspaper still on the coffee table, three days of dust on the furniture, and a carpet that hasn’t been vacuumed in a week. The average woman seems to be incapable of sitting down and relaxing. She is always on the go—from rising early to fix breakfast for the family to picking up the kids and the neighbor’s kids after swim practice. This is usually interpreted as dedication, but in reality it is due to an overriding fear of having time on her hands. Women are scared to death of boredom, and they will do almost anything to prevent it.

There is no nice way to say this, so I will put it bluntly. She’s doing all the work, because you are sitting on your ass. Women are not afraid of boredom, not by a long shot. But to many, free time in a luxury they don’t have. Despite the advances in gender roles, some things are quicker to change then others. While women are now encouraged, even expect, to take a career and earn income for their family, the same cannot be said for men taking up their share of the housework.

I’ve spent a lifetime watching my mother fall into this trap. Both my parents work, but when my dad arrives home he’s “tired and deserves a rest.” Meanwhile, my mother was expected to get dinner on the table and clean up afterwards, and get my brother and I off to our various activities. When I asked her about this blatant inequality, she would say it simply was not worth the fight. I disagree, but I digress.

Women aren’t afraid of boredom, there are just things that need doing.

To a woman, appearance is everything. She will be unhappy if she cannot improve hers, and she will interpret your failure to improve yours as a sign that you don’t care about her.

This is a very sweeping generalization. While to some women – and we all know at least one or two – to whom appearance is paramount, I would wager that the majority aren’t that shallow. While I admit, I put on make up and three inch heels from time to time, I don’t make a habit of it. I spend most days working with my dogs, and they don’t care what I look like.

Have you ever noticed that whenever a woman catches a man looking at her, her first response is a smile? That reaction is a direct result of her obsession with appearances; she knows instinctively that she looks better smiling than not. Furthermore, she realizes that the man, who might otherwise be embarrassed at having been surprised in the act of looking at her, will be put at ease by a smile.

Well, the second part is right, the first is kind of offensive. A smile isn’t about looking good, it is a universal human signal of acceptance and greeting. It is always accompanied by a lifting to the eyebrows, giving the face an open, approachable appearance. This is part of basic body language and goes back to pre-human primates as a way of saying “I am one of you.”

Always be well coifed, and when you’re with a female you want to impress, smooth your hair with your hand. This signal is a universally understood message of sexual interest. (The signal works both ways, incidentally; if you see her arranging her hair in your presence, it indicates that she is interested in you.)

If this were true, I would be a whore. I touch my hair constantly, especially when I’m nervous or thinking hard. Not to mention when it falls in my face. Also, guys who slick back their hair tend to look sleazy and used-car-salesman-like.

Women lack confidence. They need continual reassurance, not only of their beauty and desirability, but of their very worth as human beings.”

Do I really need to spell out what is wrong with this sentence? Yes, it is nice to hear that I am beautiful and desirable. But, no, I do not lay my self-worth at the feet of what others think of me. Nor do I believe that anyone, male or female, should.

You can judge a woman’s empathy level from questioning her. Bring up a current instance of genocide (there’s almost always one in progress somewhere in the world) and note her reaction.”

“Hi, my name is John Smith, what do you think of Darfur?” is a really bad line. Talking about politics or religion, especially in these divisive times, is always dicey; opening with genocide isn’t likely to get you a date. Quite frankly, if this was the first subject someone wanted to talk to me about – outside of some very specific events – I’m going to exit the conversation as quickly as possible and avoid them for the rest of forever. It’s creepy.

A salesman friend of mine once asked me if I knew the difference between rape and ecstasy. When I shrugged and said I didn’t, he said, “Salesmanship.” This is one of those jokes that derives its humor from the fact that it is so very close to the truth.”

I’ve said it in several reviews, but it always bares repeating, and lines like this are why. Rape is a terrible, horrible, traumatic event that can happen to anyone. It’s not a punch line. It’s not acceptable under any circumstances. And it is never sexy! If a guy told me this joke, I’d probably break his nose on principle alone.

They crave reinforcement of their value as human beings and particularly as women—which brings us to a profound insight into the female psyche: a woman will be attracted to any man who shows an interest in her.

Bullshit.

Licking your lips when looking at her or letting her catch you looking at her breasts is guaranteed to increase her respiration rate. Probably the most effective body language is the crotch glance. When you meet her in the hallway or on the street, nod and smile at her and then flick your eyes to her crotch—then quickly away. Though she’ll pretend not to, she will notice it, and it will excite her.

And probably flip you the bird as soon as your back is turned. Treating a woman like a piece of meat isn’t the way to make her more receptive. More than likely, it will just piss her off. Unless you are already engaged in a consenting sexual relationship with a woman, keep your eyes above her collar bone. Or at the very least, learn some discretion.

And of course, with most relationships, there must be an end of some kind.

A less tortuous course is to simply convince her that you are a clod. For some of us, this may not seem all that difficult, but you must remember that, where you are concerned, she has her anti-clod filter in place. She doesn’t want to believe that she could get involved with a dork, so you’ll have to really work at convincing her. Stare at other women in restaurants, ask her to repeat what she just said as though you weren’t listening to her, make love as though you’re interested only in satisfying your own needs, and feign indifference when she complains about your boorishness. Throw in a few instances of showing up late for a date without an excuse and several occasions of embarrassing her in front of her friends, and you’re virtually assured of being shown the door.

If you no long want to be in a relationship, grow a pair and tell her. Acting like an ass is just pathetic and cowardly.

The In between

This is section is for those pieces that, while the idea is sound, the logic behind it is screwy.

If she makes a mistake, take charge and fix it for her. If she loses her purse, get on the phone and cancel her credit cards for her. If she overdraws her checking account, put more money in it for her. Don’t berate her if she bangs up your car; just call your insurance agent and get it repaired. Don’t gloat when she buys an antique chair with uneven legs; get your tool kit out and even them up for her. She looks on you as her protector—as her buffer against life’s bumps and bruises. Don’t let her down.

Never criticize her. If she says something you think is stupid, let it pass. If she embarrasses herself, take her in your arms, stroke her hair, and tell her that everything will be all right. Assure her that she will always have your support and that, no matter what she does, she need never fear your displeasure.

Going back to the his own rule, “I love you” is better then “I told you so.” Everyone makes mistakes, and pointing them out at every turn is the fastest way to loose someone you care about. And going out of your way to help someone when they make a mistake, is a great way to say “I love you.”

The mistake here, is the assumption that she needs these things done for her. Setting aside that I’m certain you cannot cancel someone else’s credit cards, the idea that a man needs to be there to fix things for a woman is a foundation of chauvinism. Furthermore, the examples given pander to the age old meme that woman can’t manage money, drive, and are in capable of using tools. It also fails to point out that men are just as human and fallible, and that at some point they too will make a mistake and need support and help.

The important thing to understand here, however, is that women are not only prone to judge a book by its cover, they have a natural aversion to opening a book whose cover is not at least presentable. In dealing with women, therefore, never rely on your intrinsic value to impress her. You may be brilliant, you may be passionate, you may be the most dedicated man ever created, but if you present yourself as a grubby, unshaven bum in a soiled shirt, all she will see is a grubby, unshaven bum in a soiled shirt.”

In and of itself, the idea is correct. If a man approaches me looking grubby, all I’m going to see is a project. That said, first impressions are everything. You won’t show up to a job interview looking like a slob. If you do, the interviewer – regardless of gender – is going to assume you are too lazy to take care of yourself, and by extension, too lazy to do the job. Simply said, this is not a female trait, but a human one.

As an aside, let me apprise you of still one more I that must be considered in a successful long term relationship. This I is one that is to be avoided—infidelity....Suppress any displays of interest in other women, and avoid intimacy and insinuation like the plague. A woman will not care that you are in a committed relationship; if you send the right signals, she will respond! Women do not recognize such a thing as innocent flirtation. Where men are concerned, their philosophy is all or nothing.

This may seems an odd thing to criticize: infidelity is bad and discouraging it is good. The problem lies in the fact that up until this point, the author has treated having affairs as common place, and at times, even gives advice on how to accomplish them. The about face is so surprising, it almost gave me whiplash.

Also, portraying women as mindless territorial animals who come to heel and fight to the death for a come hither stare is incredibly offensive.

The truth:

Here is the ugly truth of the modern world, boys.

I. Don’t. Need. You.

That’s right, I said it. In these modern times no woman needs a man. I can own my own home, have my own careers, and call an escort service if I so desire. If I want kids, I can order sperm from an online catalog and have it shipped directly to my doctor’s office.

If you want to attract a woman, remember, women are human. We have thoughts, and feelings, and interests, and ideas, and all can be completely separate from men. Be genuine, don’t fake it. If you don’t drink, don’t go to bars. If you don’t like to dance, avoid clubs. Yes, you can meet women in these places, but you can also meet them in churches or book stores or aquariums. Find women in places and activities you already enjoy. It will give you a baseline, a starting point, and something to talk about without having to make anything up or pretend to be something you aren’t.

And as another point, learn to help out. If I’ve had to get up early to get the kids off the school, spent all day at work, driven all over town getting everyone to the after school activities, made dinner, and cleaned the house; I’m tired, probably pissed off, and I don’t want to have sex.

Overall

This book is aimed in he right direction, but it largely misses the point. Most of what is presented is hilarious and/or insulting, and far more likely to get you slapped than a date.

Life as we knew it pretty much ended with the lightning fast spread of the plague. The media called it Werewolf Syndrome. Women got sick, many died. They were the lucky ones. Men got sick, too, but those who didn't die... changed. A few immune men, like myself, joined the bands of refugees, scrounging for survival in the post-apocalyptic devastation.

I lived in a fortified compound with a couple dozen women, a bunch of kids and two asshole straight guys. Sounds like a man's wet dream -- unless you happen to be the last gay man standing. At the time, risking my life scavenging in the city sounded like a fucking vacation.

I went out hunting supplies and found something else. Not a quick death, or even a slow, painful one at the hands of the beasts -- no such luck. Instead I find myself captive to the largest, most well organized gang of beast men ever. Their leader, Mace, wants more than just a generator -- he wants my body. Oddly, a certain part of me likes that idea. The other part –- the part with working survival instincts -- insists I get the hell out of Dodge before my smart mouth gets the shit kicked out of me. Again. Tradeoffs...

Review:

There was only one thing that I found lacking with this work. It ended waaay too soon. In fact, if this had been an actual print book instead of an e-book, I probably would have looked pretty silly, sitting there flipping it over in all kinds of different directions and asking, “Hey, where’s the rest of it?”

That should be taken as a compliment. I really liked this story. Daniel was a very engaging narrator. He’s smart, snarky, and sarcastic, a combination that gets him into a lot of trouble with a group of creatures who could tear him apart in a heartbeat.

The world has been torn apart in this post-apocalyptic story. Torn apart by a virus that turned most of the male population of the world into basically monsters -- werewolves, to be precise -- and poor Daniel finds himself caught out alone in their territory. Taken prisoner, he’s forced to make himself useful, or become a toy to the wolf pack.

Most of Daniel’s commentary on these creatures in not very flattering. Generally referring to them as “beasts,” their actions don’t go very far to dispel that image. Of course, Daniel doesn’t really try very hard to understand them. Not even after he’s taken as Mace’s lover.

I found his reactions to them very believable. After all, who wouldn’t be terrified if they found themselves in Daniel’s situation, a prisoner in a foreign society and given the edict to help them or die?

The only other thing that bugged me about this story -- besides it not being long enough, although the two do kind of tie in together -- is that there were a lot of references to Daniel “recognizing” Mace and seeing his ex-lover in his new one, either by seeing past the changes made by the virus -- as with their first meeting -- or by some of Mace’s mannerisms as the story goes along. There were also references to the virus itself and the way it came about or distributed. I would have really liked to have seen more about that, although I can understand why we didn’t see it. After all, Daniel’s an engineer, not a doctor, and he was only really on the periphery of the whole epidemic since he himself was immune to it.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this work. Brannan Black has created an intriguing world and rich characters that I wouldn’t mind seeing more of.

This is the last book in this wonderful series. If you have not been following it, you should be. In this final story the Chanku must all band together and face things as one. It has been years since what transpired in the last book and change has begun. I enjoyed Lily and her role in the book. There were so many questions answered and some new ones asked. I hope to get to visit Lily some more as she grows up and see what direction the pack will go from here.

The depth of the emotions that everyone feels in this book makes for a wonderful read. I especially enjoyed the love and the bond that Lily has with her father Anton. As always this author does a great job of pulling the reader into the wondrous world of the pack. I hope this is not the last that we see of them. I would love to go back and visit again.

Evangaline is not a very nice witch, but ask her if she cares. However, she does have a healthy sexual appetite, and when an uncouth shifter starts appearing in her fantasies, it's not long before she makes her erotic mind play a reality. But everyone knows a wicked witch can't fall in love, or can she?

Ryker, a hot and muscled shifter, knows his size and dominating presence intimidates women, all except for one curvy witch he just can't get out of his mind. Set to a task only the two of them can accomplish, he discovers wickedness has its uses, especially in the bedroom.

Dealing with vamps, a wedding from hell and a cackling gnome named Rumpelstiltskin, will these two wicked beings survive and, even more disturbing, decide to stay together?

Review:

In this fast paced and cute story we meet Evangaline who has the reputation of being the meanest witch around. The first time Ryker sees her he is more than smitten and when she stands up to him he is more than blown away. When the two are forced to work together on a job the fireworks begin. Will Ryker and Evangaline be able to find a way to tolerate each other and work together before it is to late?

This was a nice read that takes us on a magical ride with characters we all know but this ride is different than the one we are used to. I enjoyed this author’s take on the magical world and its inhabitants. I loved Ryker, he may come off as a mean man but we see that he does have a heart. The emotions that he and Evangaline have are intense and make for an enjoyable read.

Although I enjoyed this book I would have liked to have a bit more depth with Evangaline and Ryker.

All in all Wickedest Witch is a playful read and if you are looking for a quick and fun read this is a book you want to check out.

Review:

Okay. I don’t give this rating often. But this book? Totally deserves it. The world is well-built, the characters just about leap off the page, and the plot flows exceptionally well. Now, I will admit that I had the tiniest bit of a problem with the opening few pages, but that’s only because it took me a minute or two to get used to Jem’s turn of phrase and rough manner of speaking. Once I got past that, though, I absolutely loved this story.

Jem and Alan meet under rather unusual circumstances. “Unusual” in the sense that Alan has picked up Jem, a common street whore, in order to indulge himself one last time before he ends his own life. It does not, however, go as Alan plans as he discovers that the whore he’s picked up is just what he needed to make an otherwise joyless life livable.

I think the reason I love this book so much is that it’s believable. Jem and Alan’s relationship is by no means perfect -- both because of Alan’s rank and Jem’s more common roots, and because the punishment if their affair is ever discovered would be death for both of them. In the end, though, they manage to overcome the obstacles before them and find happiness in each other.

Faced with club-wielding Pinkerton agents, an inconvenient dead body, and a shortage of money, the three work their way east and north.

Twilight and Stone forge an alliance of reliance, then trust, and then affection. Both try to deal with their feelings for one another while pursuing their individual mating dances with the man they both love. An old enemy of Stone's finds them in an Atlanta bordello, and issues a challenge Twilight makes the mistake of accepting.

They steal away north. Unfortunately, the three of them leave a trail that someone is finding all too easy to follow.

Steal Away really does just that to the reader. Every feeling Ms. Green had her characters feel, I felt; from the heat of summer in a Southern town to the feeling of desperation of trying to make a better life. I enjoyed this story with its twist and turns. Not knowing what exactly to expect but falling in love and cheering on the characters was what ended up happening. I hear Jazz from a by-gone era now and smile while remembering this story. Twilight felt like a little sister to me. She wanted her independence but I also felt like she needed protecting from the big bad world. I guess she showed me. Daniel needed the reassurance that he could love and be loved by more than one person. Hector showed everyone that he was big enough to do just that.

Review:

L.C Chase gives us a well written story with Long Tall Drink, complete with sexy cowboys, thick sexual tension and hot man love.

All my faves.

Rancher Ray is deep in the closet, hiding his sexual preference after a childhood trauma involving his father. On his way back from a tryst with his secret lover, he picks up hitch-hiker Travis. Immediately the attraction between the two takes center stage, but once Ray finds out who Travis is, he pushes his feelings aside.

Renowned horse trainer and openly gay Travis is working for Ray, who holds him at arms length even as sparks crackle and hiss whenever they’re near each other.

I loved Long Tall Drink. It’s filled with great characters and descriptions. The sex wasn’t much here, but when the men came together it was scorching. The passion simmering between these two men literally burned off the pages and I can’t wait to see if there are more stories involving some of the secondary characters.

Review:

In this dark story we meet a man who enjoys his sex with a lot of kink and because of his arrogance he makes a fateful mistake. He plays with the wrong woman and is forever cursed until he can find the love he denied others. When Amarantha’s family gives her to the Beast she learns about herself and what she did not even know she wanted.

This story is not for the faint hearted or easily offended. The Beast puts Amarantha through a lot. He is a man with a strong sexual appetite and brings Amarantha’s out as well.  I enjoyed seeing the relationship that the two build. Even though the sex is a major part through out her stay with the Beast, Amarantha finds herself seeing the man he truly is inside. The two seem to be made for each other and through it all I kept hoping that Amarantha would answer the Beast questions with a resounding “yes”.

This book is a wonderful retelling of a great fairytale. Jennifer Paris does a good job of bringing the reader into the magical world of the Beast. I was pulled right in from the start and kept turning those pages waiting for Amarantha’s answer just like the Beast. I certainly hope that this is not the only tale this author decides to try her hand at.

Ewan McCabe, the eldest, is a warrior determined to vanquish his enemy. Now, with the time ripe for battle, his men are ready and Ewan is poised to take back what is his—until a blue-eyed, raven-haired temptress is thrust upon him. Mairin may be the salvation of Ewan’s clan, but for a man who dreams only of revenge, matters of the heart are strange territory to conquer.

Though the illegitimate daughter of the king, Mairin possesses prized property that has made her a pawn—and wary of love. Her worst fears are realized when she is rescued from peril, only to be forced into marriage by her charismatic and commanding savior, Ewan McCabe. But her attraction to her ruggedly powerful new husband finds her craving his surprisingly tender touch; her body comes alive under his sensual mastery. And as war draws near, Mairin’s strength, spirit, and passion challenge Ewan to conquer his demons—and embrace a love that means more than revenge and land.

Review:

Mairin Stewart had been placed in a convent since early childhood to protect her and her royal secret. It is her link to the king of Scotland that has proven to be her biggest threat. Now she has been discovered and ripped from the security of her haven, to be used as a weapon against the crown and to gain her impressive dowry. Ewan McCabe’s only son Crispin has disappeared. The Laird of the decimated McCabe clan is frantic. When the boy is found with a woman wearing the colors of his hated enemy Duncan Cameron, he is rightfully enraged. Crispin has vowed to protect Mairin and her secret, even from his father if necessary, but when Ewan learns of the mysterious woman’s bravery in protecting his son from Duncan, he gives her his promise of protection as well. Ewan‘s idea of protection calls for a priest, rings, and a bed. He intends to marry Mairin.

This is one of the easiest reviews I will ever have to write because I can do it in one word. PERFECT. *sigh* I guess I should expand on that a bit. The heroine Mairin was a peach. She was very sheltered, but not the least bit timid or afraid to say what was on her mind. In fact that is a running joke through the entire book. If she has a thought, it is verbalized whether or not it’s appropriate. I just loved her character and she has joined the list of my favorite heroines. To say that she had snark was a given, but she also developed a bit of a mean streak, which was just the cherry on top of the sundae. Ewan is a Highland Laird, so already ..yum. Dominant, aggressive, arrogant, Ewan had these traits in spades. He was also fair, funny, loyal and protective. Oh. And frickin HOT. Still not your cup of tea, well he has two brothers, so there’s something for every taste.

The story itself was wildly entertaining and I read it with out putting it down once. It has all the elements of a great Scottish love story. Betrayal, lust, greed, plenty of bloody fights, amazingly witty dialogue and just the right amount of sizzling sex . Maya Banks is well on her way to conquering all the romance genres. She certainly has command of this one. This is a “Must Read” for any fan of great romance regardless of the genre. There is absolutely no way you will regret reading this book, and it will leave you panting for the next in the series. Really Maya, a trilogy? That is not going to be any where close to enough. Maybe there are a few McCabe cousins you don’t know about.

Cursed with immortality, Dermot MacKay craves death. To lift the faerie curse placed upon him and his men over 1,600 years ago, he must return the soul of his reincarnated wife to the exact place and time of her murder. But her soul is currently residing in the very modern Sidney St. George—and first he has to convince her to accompany him to Scotland.

Sidney doesn't believe Dermot's wild claims of immortality and rebirth, yet she cannot deny that she is drawn to the sexy Scot. Nor can she explain the sense of déjà vu his touch elicits. Desperate for answers, she agrees to go with him—only to learn too late that to help the man she loves is to lose him forever...

Review:

Sidney St. George was under a mountain of debt and her family was dependant on her for their livlihood. Getting her fledgling gift shop operating in the black was her main focus. When she starts to have very realistic dreams warning her to beware of peril in the form of a Scotsman, she attributes the strange dreams to stress and perhaps the lack of a social life. Even after the gorgeous, mysterious and very Scottish, Dermot Mackay shows up at her shop demanding she make time for him, she still marks it down to coincidence. That is until Dermot explains that he is a Druid Laird who has been waiting over sixteen hundred years for her to break his curse. Then she just thinks he's crazy.

Dermot and Sidney were both very closed off characters at first. They were both intently focused on their goals, and it took some time to get to the people underneath. The secondary characters of Zoe (Sidney’s BFF and roommate) and Thomas (Dermot’s cousin and fellow cursee) were veritable fonts of information on the two main characters. At times it was as if they were narrating the story. This wasn’t a bad thing, it was just unusual and took me a minute to realize I actually liked it. The premise and storyline were superbly crafted and held my attention with a myriad of twists and turns, nasty surprises, evil Tuatha De’ Danann and some fairly hot romance. The characters of Dermot and Sidney really develop nicely in the second half of the book as he loses some of his rigidity and she gains a bit of snark. There were a couple of passages where she lets him have it with both barrels and I actually cheered because he did come across as a bit high handed. All things considered though, he was under a LOT of pressure.

The story really starts to gain momentum in the second half of the book and things move very quickly. By the end I was very emotionally involved in the drama of these characters and was just a tad teary eyed at parts. There are some heart stopping moments near the end. I enjoyed the journey and the time spent with all these yummy Scotsmen, and their ladies weren’t half bad either. I think Heart of the Druid Laird is a good way to spend a few hours and would do so again with little provocation.

But loving Fury is one thing…taming him is another.

Reader Advisory: This story contains the heartrending aftermath of a rape scene involving a captive male. Another scene involves capture and forced touching by a hurt, vengeful Fury.

Review:

Many would compare Laurann Dohner’s New Species series to another, more well known author’s work, but Fury didn’t come across that way to me at all. I was engrossed with these complex characters from the word go, totally caught up in their lives and rooting for them to iron out their differences and come together.

Ellie is undercover in a lab using animal DNA to test on humans. The subject known only as 416 gets under her skin and she begins to care for him. Ultimately saving him from an atrocious act by a despicable human being. 416 doesn’t know the reasons for Ellie’s actions and sets out for revenge.

Later they meet and oh, that scene when 416—now known as Fury—first sets eyes on Ellie. The danger, the tension. I loved it all. Fury wants to pay back Ellie for leaving him behind when she escaped but he find he also wants her. The alpha thing does it for me, but Fury is also a caring man who treats Ellie so amazingly well. It was great to see their love unfold from enemies to lovers.

Ellie has a great backbone on her, not once did I worry that she couldn’t hold her own with Fury. The sex was scorching, the supporting cast strong and the plot captivating. I read Fury in one seating, and grumbled when it ended. I can’t wait for the next installment in this series.

Review:

I really anticipated reading Big Cypress Crossing. The blurb pulled me in and I’m a sucker for some man love. Bren Christopher is a new to me author and I wanted to give her a chance to wow me.

Florida tour guide Noah finds a dead body in the Everglades and cop Scott is doing the investigating. The two settle into a hot affair as they work to uncover the mystery surrounding a drug cartel. Noah also has secrets and those are kept close to the vest for a long while.

There are many things I liked about Big Cypress Crossing and some I didn’t. I loved the descriptions. Bren Christopher took me into the Everglades, a place I’d never been but felt familiar with. Awesome visuals. The plot and mystery is well done, the love scenes as well.

Noah’s attitude at time was a bit self serving and he really grated on my nerves. The way in which he and Scott fell into bed was too easy. I liked Scott, but to me there was nothing remarkable or memorable about him.

It took me a really long time to finish Big Cypress Crossing. A book I’d finish in mere hours took weeks. I kept putting it down because nothing was truly captivating or engrossing enough to keep me hooked.

Though there’s an immediate attraction between himself and Ford, they're just too different to make a relationship work. The sex is explosive and despite himself Gavin even grows to like Ford’s quirky sense of humor and skewed view of life. Isn’t that good enough?

He makes it his mission to overcome Gavin’s doubts and fears and teach him how to love again. Never giving up in his enthusiastic pursuit of the once-burned twice-shy secretary, he brings Gavin back to life and helps restore him to the man he used to be.

Ford makes Gavin want to believe in love again. But when Ford begins to lose his faith, it’s up to Gavin to save the magic they have between them and blaze the trail toward their happily ever after.

Publisher's Note: This book contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations that some readers may find objectionable: Male/male sexual practices.

Review:

It’s not very often that a story makes me squee from cute, “awww” from adorable mush, make me want to bang some sense into a big idiot’s head, and then sigh with content at a tale well ended. BUT! This one did all of that and more. Ms. Otaki has written a lovely, lively tale of faith, love, and learning that sometimes the way to true happiness is letting go of all the things that hold you back…and believing that the signs won’t steer you wrong.

The characters are really what make this story. From Ford -- a lovable bear of a man -- to Kayla – a chance-met stranger who becomes a very good friend – to Gavin – skittish, broken, and not really willing to open his heart – this work rests on the vitality and personality of its characters. Ford and Gavin are incredibly well-rounded, complete with flaws and hang-ups. The supporting characters (right down to Oscar, the F1 cross) aren’t just there as fluff and filler. They have a purpose, and that’s to further the story of Ford and Gavin’s relationship.

Ford’s greatest challenge, in the beginning, is convincing Gavin that the signs he’s followed and believes in so strongly are 100% accurate and that Gavin is the man Ford’s destined to marry. Ford’s personality is so well conveyed that it’s very easy to see and feel his faith – and equally easy to feel the heartbreak when that faith gets shaken.

I loved Gavin’s growth. From heartbroken mouse who’s almost too afraid to accept what’s offered him to fighting tiger, more than willing to chase down what he’s almost lost and grab it with both hands. I loved the fire he gains.

This one was definitely a roller-coaster. Told with a refreshing blend of humor and charm, Because It’s True is truly a Gotta Read.

Review:

As a young girl, I used to fantasize about meeting a man who would love me forever, no matter what. This story is a great twist on that fantasy. What woman wouldn't want a man to punch his way through time and space and find her when he thought she might be lost forever?

Ms. McBride writes with her usual flair and unique spin on time travel. The reader is genuinely satisfied with the quirks and awkwardness expected with the 100 year age time difference and varied customs and clothing. The scenes range from comedic to romantic to frantic and back again. The attention to detail when the author describes the Victorian home, the surrounding land and the scenery in both time periods is phenomenal.

I loved every single page because it is apparent from the beginning that the pace is consistent and compelling just like all of her other titles. I plan to purchase a few copies as gifts to friends because this story can touch everyone on several levels.

Meredith Willis is suspicious of Adrien, the new guy next door. When she dares to sneak a look into the windows of his house, she sees something in the cellar that makes her believe that Adrien might be more than just a creep—he may be an actual monster.

But her sister, Heather, doesn’t share Meredith’s repulsion. Heather believes Adrien is the only guy who really understands her. In fact, she may be falling in love with him. When Adrien and Heather are cast as the leads in the school production of Romeo and Juliet, to Heather, it feels like fate. To Meredith, it feels like a bad omen. But if she tries to tear the couple apart, she could end up in the last place she’d ever want to be: the cellar. Can Meredith convince her sister that she’s dating the living dead before it’s too late for both of them?

Review:

I wasn’t sure exactly what I was getting into with The Cellar, but what I found was a fun story and a great read.

Meredith is a typical high school misfit, she has had a rough time with the death of her father in a car accident, her sisters injuries in that same accident, her mothers checking out and her aunt and cousin moving in to help out. But all of that is pretty tame in comparison to what she has to face when Adrien St. Germain moves in next door.

I really enjoyed this story. The interactions between the characters were well written and fun and there is a twist to the story that I found very interesting.

I would defiantly recommend The Cellar to anyone over the age of 13. Any younger than that and it may be too graphic.

A florist by day, vampire Bianca DeLuca stalks werewolves by night. For years she has hunted Raffe Stefano, a notorious werewolf credited with multiple vampire kills.

When Bianca's apartment goes up in flames, fireman Raffe not only rescues her, but offers the shelter of his apartment. Though he surely can't be trusted, Bianca accepts his invitation, and they soon learn that their intense feelings for one another are based not in revulsion, but mutual lust. Will one murder the other? Or will passion ultimately consume them, intertwining their destinies forever?

Review:

Bianca DeLuca is a vampire whose mission in life is hunting werewolves, especially Raffe Stefano. She is obsessed with him and though she owns and works at her Buds and Blooms floral shop by day, at night, she is a ruthless stalker. They meet one night in an alley and wound each other but neither is ready to take the kill. They agree to save it for the next time. Later, Bianca’s apartment is consumed with fire and she is trapped in her bedroom and at the last minute a fireman breaks through the door and rescues her. The fireman turns out to be Raffe. She is frazzled and homeless so he offers her a truce and to stay at his place overnight. She makes herself at home in his apartment, on his orders and once he comes home he showers and puts both their clothes in the washer. Upon seeing Bianca’s thong he starts talking about sex and the two of them enter a night of never-ending pleasure for each of them. Bianca asks him if all werewolves have the stamina he has and he confirms it. Finally, she has too much of his cum/venom in her and she blacks out. When she comes to, she is disoriented and wants to forget the whole thing happened and leave. She makes him take her to a street away from her shop so he won’t know where she works. She falls asleep in her chair in the back room of her shop when she hears a scratching at the front door. She goes to it and it’s a dog who when she lets in turns into Raffe. He professes his love to her and attempts to persuade her to be with him forever. He even tells him her sisters in lace have taken up with werewolves. Will Bianca believe him? Will she leave her way of life for a new one?

The author was very explicit just to the perfect point. She took the characters and made you like one and hate the other and then confuse you by adding sex between the two. Her sex scenes were perfectly layed out so you could picture them in your head. The twist of the bad guy turning good was brilliant on her part as you didn’t see it coming. She did an awesome job and I would recommend this book to everyone who likes vampire/werewolf flesh on flesh stories.

Detective Richard Dick is hired to look into mysterious disappearances in the town of Wareville. His client is enormous, the suspects are bizarre and the situation is turning critical. This isn't Dick's typical case but, then again, this laugh-out-loud story isn't your typical mystery either!

Review:

The Dresden files, this ain’t. There is not anything particularly mysterious about this story. In fact, I had it pegged five pages in. The only notable point is that his client is a ghost.

The thing about mysteries, what makes them fun to read, is trying to guess what the outcome will be; then rereading to see the clues you overlooked the first time.

Overall, this story is pretty bland.
